Taking a screenshot is very easy. Press Print Screen button (PrtSc) on the keyboard (is located on the far right hand side of a normal keyboard, above the “insert”, near the “F12” key). This copies the contents of Your screen. You will get the full screenshot, then open MS Paint (for Windows, from the Start menu, select Run and type in mspaint.exe) or any other image editor and press CTRL+V (or Edit>Paste) to paste it. Then edit, or just save the image. I recommend You to change the file type from bmp to jpeg (.jpg) to reduce the size of your pictures.

  • Pressing the PrtSc button will copy the entire desktop (whole screen);
  • Pressing the Alt and PrtSc buttons will copy just the active window, you won’t be capturing the Taskbar and other items on your desktop screen;
  • (Pressing the Alt, Shift and PrtSc buttons will turn on a high contrast mode for the visually impaired.);
  • You can also open MS Paint: Start>All programs>Accessories>Paint;
  • You can also directly paste the captured screen to any program like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Photoshop, etc.

If for some reason your PrtSc key is working like the Home key in a browser window. (Home takes you to the top of the webpage and Alt +Home takes you to your browser home page.) Then if you are you using a laptop or a computer using a compact keyboard, or maybe one of the IR or RF keyboards try pressing the Fn key. Depending on the keyboard you may have to either hit it once to toggle the PrtSc key or press it at the same time as the PrtSc key.

How to make a screenshots by pressing the print screen button (or PRT SCN on PC, PRT SC on laptops).

A long time ago, this key actually did what it says – it sent the current screen of text to your printer. Nowadays, pressing PRINT SCREEN captures an image of your entire screen (a “screenshot”) and copies it to the Clipboard in your computer’s (PC, Laptop) memory. From there you can paste it (CTRL+V, or Edit>Paste) into Microsoft Paint (Default image editor in Windows) or another program and, if you want, print it from that program. You won’t know anything has happened until you paste the image into an image editor.

More obscure is SYS RQ, which shares the key with PRINT SCREEN on some keyboards. Historically, SYS RQ was designed to be a “system request,” but this command is not enabled in Windows.

Tip: Press ALT+PRINT SCREEN to capture an image of just the active window, instead of the entire screen.

With laptops, the key is usually a secondary key, meaning you have to hold down a key that says “Fn” on the lower left of the laptop keyboard.
